Rodney Scott is a James Beard Award-winning chef and celebrated pitmaster renowned for his mastery of whole-hog barbecue. Born in Philadelphia, Scott moved with his family to Hemingway, South Carolina, at the age of one. There, his parents operated Scott’s Variety Store and Bar-B-Q, where Scott began learning the art of smoking whole hogs at just 11 years old. By 17, he was working full-time in the family business, which became a cornerstone of the local community. In 2017, Scott partnered with restaurateur Nick Pihakis to open Rodney Scott’s BBQ in Charleston, South Carolina. The restaurant's success led to expansions in Birmingham, Alabama, and Atlanta, Georgia, bringing Scott's signature vinegar-based barbecue to a broader audience.
Scott's culinary philosophy emphasizes simplicity, patience, and respect for tradition. He gained national recognition with his appearance on Netflix's Chef's Table: BBQ in 2020, where he showcased his meticulous approach to cooking whole hogs over wood coals . His cookbook, Rodney Scott’s World of BBQ, published in 2021, offers a blend of personal stories, recipes, and insights into his barbecue techniques Beyond his culinary achievements, Scott is known for his positive outlook and commitment to community.
